With the number of things happening in our lives these days, such as social media, family, work, and others, managing our time can be tricky. For example, if you run your own company, it takes a lot of time to manage and function properly. It’s not so much as putting the time in, rather, I want to show you how to use your time as effectively as possible.
Interestingly, bad time management is rather a myth. You aren’t able to fully recognize where you should be focusing, and really hammering down to the tasks that need your time the most.
In this article, we will be discussing three tips and tricks to master time management. So let’s talk about time management, and some of the tips and tricks to help you maximize your output so you can use your time as effectively as possible.
1) Start Your Day with an Agenda
Planning for your day is incredibly important. If you start your day with no plan at all, then you have already failed. Managing your time starts with having a plan of action already in place to guide you through your day.
Instead of scheduling your week in advance, go day-to-day. Schedule things the day before, the night before, or the morning of to help you dictate your day. Organization leads to results, remember that. You can even use just a simple checklist to organize your day.
2) Multi-Tasking Doesn’t Exist, Don’t Bother with It
Multi-tasking doesn’t exist, simple as that. If you’re trying to do different things at once, all you’re doing is just turning your attention from one thing to another. You’re not giving a task 100% of your focus and attention so that you can complete it. If you try to multi-task, it’s actually way harder to get things done. You should try to block your time in maybe 30 minutes or so where you focus 100% on something, then you move onto the next task.
If you focus on a single task at a time, you can as much as double your productivity in a day.
3) Plan Your Time Accordingly Due to Interruptions
Interruptions are a part of life, they’re going to happen. Whether you’re at home, at the office, or in a public place, you’re going to get interrupted no matter what. No work week will go as smoothly as you plan. As mentioned in tip #2, you should work in blocks of time. So if you work for 25 minutes, you should give yourself a 5-minute break where you take time to deal with those distractions. This allows you to be as efficient as possible. The best way to combat interruptions is to allocate time to deal with them, if possible. If you can help it, deal with the distractions at the least busy time of the days so that you can get as much work done as possible.
In a Nutshell
At the end of the day, you should do what works for you. Time management is something that takes some skill and time to get use to. It took me several weeks to effectively start using the planner that I use now. I create my “Daily Success List” where those are the tasks that I must complete and will complete finishing my day off as successful as possible.
To review, here is a quick recap:
- Start your day with an agenda.
- Multi-tasking doesn’t exist, don’t bother with it.
